Sarah Shepard

Age: 31

Height: 180.3 cm (5' 11")

Weight: 70.5 kg (155.1 lbs.)

Eye Color: Green

Hair Color/Style: Brown/Tied in a ponytail

Distinguishing Features: Unlike her other family members, Sarah is one of the few Shepards that does not have a scar anywhere on her body. But while she does not have any scars, she does have a tattoo on the back of her right shoulder of a sniper scope's crosshairs.

General Description: Most people have described Sarah as very athletic and flexible, appropriate traits for someone who specializes in infiltration. Most people try to avoid sparring with her because they know she could easily deliver a powerful blow breaking their bones or seriously dislocating something. Like her brother, Sarah has a very light complexion, a common sight for someone who spends much of his or her time in space. In terms of make-up, Sarah only ever wears one simple shade of red lipstick and nothing else.

Personality: During her early military career, Sarah acted cold and distant from most people—excluding her extended family. On some missions, she would show some emotions, but they were all on the surface. None of it was real; it was all an act to keep people at a distance. In her mind, it was a way to prevent her from getting hurt by being in a relationship. No doubt this is the result of losing her parents at a very young age. However, since joining the N7 program, Sarah has shown significant emotional improvement, forming personal attachments with most of the trainees, opening up more. She has become more humane and she does not show any signs falling back into her original pattern. One unique feature of her personality is that she holds on to some of her cultural heritage, unlike her brother. She will sometimes use Japanese on instinct, though her knowledge of the language is limited. She is particularly fond of Japanese and Chinese cuisine. On a side note, it should be noted that Sarah has minor claustrophobia.

Family: Ryan Shepard (older brother), Kimi Shepard (mother, deceased), Albert Shepard (father, deceased), Hannah Shepard (aunt), Malcolm Shepard (uncle), John Shepard (cousin), Jane Shepard (cousin), Nicholas Shepard (uncle, deceased), Emily Shepard (cousin), Max Shepard (cousin), Catherine Shepard (aunt, missing), Bartholomew Shepard (uncle, missing), William Shepard (cousin), Alexandra Shepard (cousin), Claire Shepard (cousin), Thomas Shepard (cousin)

Love Interest: Thane Krios

Least Favorite Food(s)/Drink(s): Anything that is too sour or sweet

Preferences

Likes: Calligraphy, mahjong, chess, and photography

Dislikes: Chauvinistic pigs, drunken people, and racial idiots

Personal History Summary

When Sarah was younger, she spent most of her life with her brother, Ryan, and parents (Kimi and Albert) aboard their ship. Her parents were delivery people; they would haul all kinds of cargo around Alliance space and most of the Attican Traverse—the only type of cargo they never dealt with was illegal contraband.

For Sarah and Ryan Shepard, life could not be better; they got to travel the galaxy with their parents and meet all kinds of cool aliens. But everything changed for the Shepards when they received an order for delivery…into the heart of the Terminus Systems.

The delivery was supposed to be simple: standard supplies (i.e. food, water, medicine, etc.) for some new human colony. But then, just as they entered the Omega System, raiders ambushed their ship; it had little in the ways of defense, so it came as no surprise when their ship was seriously damaged in the first few minutes of the attack.

Sarah and Ryan were scared was an understatement; they were horrified, frozen with fear. Thinking quickly, their parents took them to the escape pods and launched the Ryan and Sarah first; Kimi and Albert were about to launch after them…when the raiders boarded the ship and killed them both.

As Sarah and Ryan's pod drifted through space, they watched as their parents' ship got further and further away until it was nothing more than another dot in the empty blackness of space. Ryan remained as calm as possible, but Sarah was terrified; locked in a small, space drifting through nothing but darkness. They drifted for a few hours—though it felt more like days to them—when they were finally picked by the most unlikely of people.

The ship that picked them up had a faded symbol on the side, a pirate symbol (skull and crossbones). Sarah was terrified and Ryan was just as scared, but he was determined to protect his sister. As their pod was brought on board, Ryan got in front of Sarah to act as her shield. When their pod finally made it inside the ship, the hatch opened and they found themselves surrounded by various aliens (turians, batarians, and krogan).

Sarah hid behind her brother as he tried to shield her from whatever was coming. Some of the aliens admired his bravery; one krogan commented that Ryan had a quad on him. Just then, a door opened in the back of the cargo bay and every crewmember went silent as an asari walked into the room. Sarah peeked out from behind Ryan, watching as some of the aliens stood at attention as the asari passed her by. She heard a few of the crew call this asari Aria.

As the asari slowly approached the young duo, Ryan stood his ground in front of Sarah trying his best not to show fear. When the asari reached them, she looked them over very carefully, as if she was judging them. After several long minutes, the asari laughed and said she liked the kids. Ryan started to relax, as did Sarah, thinking they had caught a lucky break; unfortunately, their luck only lasted as far as the station of Omega.

As soon as they arrived, the asari kicked them off her ship. Apparently, her generosity went as far as rescuing them and getting them to solid ground. From then on, they were on their own, which for a pair of children was a frightening concept.

Sarah and Ryan spent the next week surviving any way they could: foraging for scraps and begging for food. The life they once had was gone and it was not coming back. Ryan was having trouble adjusting to the idea of being vagrants, but Sarah was determined to get off that station and find a better life somewhere for the two of them.

Eventually, they decided the only way they could get off the station was by stowing away aboard another ship. They found an ideal ship called the MSV Resolution, a turian frigate that had recently docked for some minor maintenance. The first opportunity they got, they snuck aboard shortly before the ship left dock. But while getting on was easy, hiding from the crew was a whole other matter.

The frigate's crew had asari and salarians on board, so food was no problem; unfortunately, Sarah and Ryan were not very stealthy and were eventually discovered by the ship's crew and captain. But rather than throw them off, Vallis Duranian (the captain) decided to make them part of the crew. Apparently he liked the looks in their eyes; there was something about them that reminded Vallis of himself in his younger days. And so, Ryan and Sarah became the cabin boy and girl of the MSV Resolution.

Over the next few years, Sarah and Ryan resumed a relatively stable life aboard the Resolution. The crew was remarkably friendly with them, despite the fact that they were humans. They also picked up some valuable skills from the various crewmembers: Vallis taught them how to use weapons, including swords, and stealth. The salarians taught them technical skills, like hacking and omni-tool maintenance. The asari taught them how to read people's expression.

It was a good life for a while, but like any good thing, it came to a bad end. No one really knows how it happened, but someone had managed to sneak a bomb on board; Sarah and Ryan were the ones who found it and they did not have much time. They did everything they could, but they were unable to get everyone to safety. Most of the crew, including the captain, died in the explosion.

Once again, the two siblings found themselves without a home; but rather than wait around for some good to come their way, they decided to try and make their own life. Thus, they began to travel around the galaxy on various ships. Sometimes, they would book passage; other times, they snuck on board and stowed away until they made dock. Whenever they did stowaway, they took extra care to not get caught; thanks to the skills they picked up from the Resolution's crew, they were hardly ever caught.

As time passed, Sarah and Ryan made their way all over the galaxy, bouncing around the Terminus Systems and the Attican Traverse. They eventually made their way back into Alliance Space and wound up making one big mistake: they stowed away on an Alliance vessel captained by Admiral Steven Hackett.

The two siblings were a little embarrassed that they had been caught, but were more concerned with what was going to happen to them. Surprisingly, Hackett was quite impressed with their skills; stowing away on board an Alliance ship was not easy and the fact that the two of them had avoided detection for so long was remarkable. He went one step further by asking them if they would be willing to join the Alliance; their skills would certainly merit accommodations.

Sarah and Ryan were hesitant, at first. They were not sure if they really wanted to join the Alliance; but while they did enjoy the freedom of wandering the galaxy, they had been carrying an emptiness they could not fill. So, they agreed to join the Alliance.

During basic training, Sarah and Ryan were called down to the commanding officer's office. Apparently, there had been some sort of mishap with their personnel files. When they arrived, they discovered that they had an extended family! It was hard to believe, but learning about their extended family turned out to be just what they were looking for. There were more than a few rough spots, but soon they came to be like a real family. Even after they graduated, Sarah and Ryan felt truly happy for the first time since their parents died.

Sarah and Ryan had very different military careers from the rest of their siblings; while they were all being assigned to squads, Sarah and Ryan were mostly given solo missions, mostly recon and infiltration. Things were going well, until they were given a particular mission; a search, rescue, and retrieve mission in the Omega Nebula. Apparently, raiders had kidnapped a group of Alliance scientists but did not make demands. The scientists had been working on some sort of secret experiment for the Alliance, something that was incredibly valuable.

The orders were simple: go in, retrieve and/or destroy whatever data they found, rescue the scientists, and eliminate the raiders. It seemed like a simple mission, like nothing could go wrong. Once they had received their orders, they suited up and prepared to depart for Orovaros, the largest moon of Nearog (Batalla System, Omega Nebula).

When they arrived, they managed to infiltrate the base without problems. One by one, they eliminated the raiders; along the way, they made an interesting discovery—the raiders who took the scientists were the same ones who attacked and destroyed their parent's ship all those years ago, making this particular assignment all the better for them.

Eventually, after slitting many raider throats, Sarah and Ryan found the scientists…along with two-dozen civilians. Getting them all out was going to be a challenge, more so with women and children in tow. They passed out some of the raiders weapons to the prisoners, giving them a chance to defend themselves while they made a run for the data.

They arrived at the server room a couple minutes later and that was when things started to get complicated. The raiders had bunkered down in the server room, ready to deal with Ryan and Sarah; they were almost caught in the enemy's crossfire, barely avoiding the shots as they flew past their heads. While they were not used to engaging in firefights, they still managed to engage and eliminate the enemy. Once the raiders were dealt with, Ryan and Sarah proceeded to grab whatever data they could from the hard drives.

While they were sifting through the data, they made a startling discovery: one of the scientists had been working with raiders. Realizing that that same scientist was with the prisoners, they raced back to the group praying that they were all right. When they finally found the group, they had all been murdered. They counted bodies; all but one of the scientists was accounted for.

A few days later, Sarah and Ryan found themselves at Arcturus Station, giving their briefing. Although they had recovered the data, the loss of the hostages (civilian and scientist alike) merited some concern by the Alliance; they had no idea one of the scientists was working with the raiders. They did not have any Intel on this missing rogue researcher; all they had was a face they got from the raiders' security system. While it was sad that innocent souls were lost, the mission had been completed and that's what really mattered to the Alliance brass.

A couple days later, Sarah and Ryan were still on Arcturus Station, recovering from the whole mission: while they had succeeded in their endeavors, the loss of the hostages was hard to take. It was then that Captain David Anderson came to inform them that they had been nominated for N7 training.

Sarah and Ryan were surprised by the news; considering how their most recent mission went, they did not think it was merit for such an honor as joining the N7 program. Anderson then went on to tell them that, despite what they thought, the mission had been a success. The civilians were casualties of war, there was no helping that; more importantly, the mission also showed them just how limited their abilities as a solo pair was. By joining the N7 program, they would gain new knowledge on skills like leadership and cooperation…that could help improve their chances on future missions.

Sarah and Ryan had a little trouble deciding whether or not to take the offer. The idea of learning how to be team leaders was daunting to them—for as long as the two of them knew, they had only ever relied on each other during missions. But then they started to think about the civilians who were murdered in cold during; maybe if they had had a team with them, the losses could have been prevented. With that thought in mind, they agreed to Captain Anderson's offer.

A week later, the two siblings were transported to Rio de Janeiro where the main N7 training facility was housed. It was here they reunited with their extended family, much to their surprise and joy. They spent the several months learning new skills and honing their old ones.

Little did Ryan and Sarah know, they and their siblings would be putting their skills through the ringer…in an event that would shake the very foundation of the galaxy.

Base Class: Infiltrator-Before joining the Alliance military, Sarah Shepard had already received moderate infiltration training. Her years spent "ship-hopping" helped to further hone those skills to a point where she was at an advanced level when she entered Basic. Since then, she has become a lean, mean stealth-killing machine. She can avoid detection from even the most vigilant guards and some of the advanced security.

Specialization Class: Assassin-After joining the N7 program, Sarah received special training in infiltration, specifically the area of assassination. While the Alliance does not officially condone the act, they nonetheless teach these particular kinds of skills. Alliance "assassins" are trained to move in fast and deliver precise, efficient strikes that quickly eliminate a target. The same can also be said for her tech abilities; she looks for any weakness in a system and uses it to gain quick access. Once she achieves this, she immediately searches for her intended target; once it has been located, they will exit the system just as quickly, leaving behind no evidence of their presence.
